Singapore Tremors

SINGAPORE: Police say buildings in Singapore are designed with in-built strength and are unlikely to collapse because of tremors caused by distant earthquakes.

Police give the assurance after tremors were felt in some 236 buildings in Singapore following two earthquakes in Sumatra, Indonesia on Tuesday.

As an added precaution, the Building and Construction Authority and HDB engineers had inspected the affected buildings.

So far, no damage had been found.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) says if the public experiences tremors, they should stay calm.

If they are inside a building they should take cover under a table and keep away from items made of glass or any hanging object.

Lifts should not be used, nor any naked lights such as matches, in case there is a gas leak.

If people are outside in the open they should remain there.

After vibrations have stopped, the public is advised to stay away from any exposed electrical cables or hanging glass objects.

They should help the injured and call the SCDF, if the injuries are serious.

They should report gas leakages to CityGas (1800-752-1800) and incidents of law and order to the Police. - CNA/ir
