SINGAPORE : Advertising spending in Singapore totalled nearly S$1.9b in 2006, up 4% over 2005, according to global media and information firm The Nielsen Company.

Research also showed a close fight between television and newspapers for the advertisers' dollars.

Each medium took home a 39 percent share of the pie.

But TV saw a stronger growth of six percent in advertising dollars over the papers' three percent.

Top advertising category spenders, like alcoholic beverages and electrical household appliances, increased their expenses by up to 52 percent on television.

Magazines registered double-digit growth of 25 percent - the highest increase among all media - to S$122 million. - CNA/ms
