SINGAPORE: 3,700 people bid a poignant farewell to the National Stadium in Singapore as they gathered for a sing-along at the venue on Saturday evening.
The National Stadium - home to 18 National Day Parades, scores of national games and the Kallang Wave - will be demolished later this year to make way for the Sports Hub.
Each of the 3,700 participants over the weekend paid $18 for the privilege of saying goodbye to the stadium.
Although some could not understand what they were singing (most of the songs, numbering more than 30, were in Mandarin), there was much enjoyment to be had.
One participant said: "I can't sing Chinese, I would love to sing for you if I could, but I can't. Why am I here? My daughter, my friend invited us. It's a little hard to understand what's going on, but I can enjoy it anyway."
Most of the participants said they have many treasured memories of the national icon, and this night could well be the last time Singaporeans gather in such big numbers here.
"It's very special because they feature songs that we grew up with, and everyone singing together, it's very touching. And also it's to commemorate our National Stadium."
The three-hour sing-along was organised by The Theatre Practice. - CNA/de/yy
