SINGAPORE: The Hong Kah Town Council has completed a project to provide easier access to the elderly and disabled in six precincts under its management.
The completion of the project at Jurong West Streets 73 and 75 signals the first phase of Hong Kah Town Council's plans to make home life easier.
The facilities, including titles on footpaths, leveling of curbs and signs pointing to barrier-free access, are not just for the elderly and disabled, but for all residents such as parents with prams.
In all, the first phase includes more than 110 blocks in Hong Kah GRC and Chua Chu Kang.
"Our idea also is to use such opportunities to make it more possible for the residents to take ownership of the precinct. Give us feedback because if they give us feedback - and we put in things they prefer - then they will have more ownership and take responsibility for the area," says Dr Amy Khor, Mayor, South West District & MP, Hong Kah GRC.
These blocks are to serve as "model precincts" - and feedback given here will also be taken into consideration when the Town Council implements barrier-free access in other precincts.
The second phase alone covers almost 200 blocks in 14 precincts.
The facilities are part of the Town Council's $3.5m five-year plan to fit out all of its estates by 2011. - CNA/yy
