SINGAPORE: Imagine a sensor map that allows you to view real-time weather conditions at any given location in Singapore from your PC.
A research team from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is currently working on such a system.
Their innovative idea has helped them clinch a prestigious research grant from Microsoft Research, beating over 140 other entries from more than 17 countries.
A prototype sensor map is currently being used in Singapore's National Weather Study Project, a large-scale environmental study project supported by various governmental agencies.
It collects and aggregates weather data from mini weather stations island-wide, before overlaying the real-time weather data over a map, which users can view over the internet.
Its potential applications include a study on the heat island effect in Singapore as well as an application case study on dengue fever.
With the grant, the research team hopes to enhance the sensor map, making it easier and more intuitive for users to use the weather data.
