SINGAPORE: The Defence Cooperation Agreement that Singapore will be signing with Indonesia this Friday will strengthen defence ties between the two countries, according to Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean.

He says this means both countries will also be able to deepen and broaden military training.

He was speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the Singapore Armed Forces "new float bridge and defence capabilities", in Marina Bay.

Bigger, better and faster – that is what the M3G or military float bridge is.

It is a well-tested and trusted platform and will significantly enhance the Singapore Army's ability to cross waterways.

The new float bridges will replace the ageing fleet currently operated by the Singapore Combat Engineers.

At Tuesday's commissioning ceremony, Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean also spoke to reporters about the successfully-completed discussions on the Defence Cooperation Agreement between Singapore and Indonesia.

"We are very glad that we have been able to come to an agreement with Indonesia in defence cooperation. We have had a very close relationship, defence relationship with the Indonesian Armed forces for many many years. I took part in the first SAF training that we had with them in 1974 so I'm delighted that we are able to conclude this agreement because it means that we can strengthen and deepen this relationship further," said Mr Teo.

Also at this event, the SAF launched its new Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Explosives (CBRE) Defence Capability, which will enhance the Defence Group's ability to respond to dangers such as chemical and biological threats.

The venue of the commissioning event is significant as the Singapore Combat Engineers was part of the creative team that mooted the idea of this floating platform as a venue for mass spectator events, which include the National Day Parade in August.

The National Day parade will be held here, as the National stadium will be torn down, to make way for the new Kallang Sports Hub. - CNA/yy
