BALI: During their talks in Bali on Friday, Prime Minister Lee and President Yudhoyono also discussed the recent disruption of granite from Indonesia to Singapore, as well as Jakarta's decision to ban the sale of sand.

According to Mr Lee's Press Secretary, the Prime Minister had stressed that despite these matters, he had decided to carry on with the negotiations for the extradition treaty and defence cooperation agreement.

Mr Lee informed President Yudhoyono, Singapore recognises that it is Indonesia's prerogative to deal with the matter, in accordance with its laws.

But Mr Lee hopes it can be seen to be handled transparently and with the proper process, so that this would avoid unnecessary misunderstanding and misinterpretations.

On the land sand ban, the spokesman said Mr Lee told President Yudhoyono that it was Indonesia's prerogative to stop sand exports as long as it was in accordance to the rules of the World Trade Organisation.

Singapore has taken note of Indonesia's decision and will make its own arrangements as necessary.

Mr Lee added that Indonesian ministers had explained this was an environmental issue and Singapore's offer to help address these concerns is still open. - CNA/yy
