SINGAPORE: Former lawyer Glenn Knight can practise again.
His application to be reinstated to the Singapore Bar has been successful.
The ex-director of the Commercial Affairs Department had been suspended from legal practice in 1991 following his conviction on corruption charges.
Mr Knight had been sentenced to a day's jail and fined $10,000.
And in 1998, he was convicted of criminal breach of trust and again sentenced to a day's jail and an additional $10,000 fine.
But Mr Knight's lawyer, C R Rajah, argued that in the last 16 years, his client had led a crime-free life.
He had been working as a consultant for various firms and remained active in church.
Mr Knight also had produced affidavits from top lawyers such as K Shanmugam, Leo Fernando and Harry Elias, who all backed Mr Knight's strength of character.
Lawyers for the Law Society and the Attorney General Chambers found no good reason to oppose Mr Knight's application.
But the AGC did ask the court to forbid Mr Knight from being a sole practitioner of a law firm.
Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong, however, questioned the relevance of this condition and did not include it in his summation.
A more detailed judgement is expected at a later date.
Following Tuesday's court decision, Mr Knight said that what's important to him is that he can practise law again.
He said: "I feel very happy, extremely grateful for this. It's been... difficult but it was necessary. Just view these things as part of life." -
