SINGAPORE: Water sports are the rage nowadays and the latest activity to join the splash is jetskiing.

More enthusiasts are taking to the sport, that is why the National Jetski Endurance Race was organised to help Singapore groom competitors for regional tournaments.

Travelling at speeds of up to a 100 kilometres per hour, jetskis had to cover a distance of 30 kilometres as part of the endurance race.

The circuit consisted of three 10-kilometre laps, a test for both men and machines that boast powerful engines ranging from 140 to 240 horsepower.

18 competitors took part in the race, including some from Malaysia.

Justin Lee, President, Singapore Powerboat Association, said: "Next year, there will be an Asia Offshore series as well as the Asia Watercross Championship, and in order for us to have a Singapore representative to take part, we really need to have our own Nationals so that we can select the riders to represent Singapore."

The National champion will only be decided after two more rounds of competition which are likely to be held at the same venue – the SAF Yacht Club.

At the same time, a bigger jetski event is being planned at the Marina Bay in a few months.

The F1 Powerboat race is making a comeback at the Bay after a year's absence, with a new promoter launching the race from the floating platform at Marina.

But for those who want a slower pace on water, there is something else.

Sim Leong Sin, General Manager, SAF Yacht Club, said: "The fishing competition that we plan to organise will be on 12 Aug. We will call it the National Day Fishing Competition. It will be offshore and we hope to attract the public to join us."

Channel NewsAsia understands it is likely to be the biggest local fishing competition and the top angler could drive home with a car.
