SINGAPORE : Moving around in the Sembawang constituency just got easier with the completion of the first batch of barrier-free access facilities there.
Implemented at a cost of S$1 million, this initial phase of the project has benefited 30,000 households living in the area.
The new facilities will cut down the hassle of getting about for the less mobile.
And the Sembawang Town Council will also ramp up its Barrier-Free Masterplan, which has been completed in 16 precincts so far.
In the next phase, some 298 blocks are up for improvement works which are expected to cost about S$2.9 million.
The entire project covers 1,019 blocks in Sembawang GRC and will be completed by 2010.
Khaw Boon Wan, Health Minister, MP - Sembawang GRC, says: "With ageing, there're lots of needs. Then we discover that when we do all these barrier-free ramps, another group that benefit, even young parents with prams, and of course housewives who go to marketing. So it turned out to be something that we thought was largely targeted at the elderly, but turned out to satisfy different cohorts of the people, which is very good."
Also in the works - putting lifts on every floor for 33 blocks with another 86 blocks set to poll for the Lift Upgrading Programme this year.
And keeping in step with living a healthy lifestyle at least 6 mega hard courts, playgrounds and another 32 elderly fitness corner are coming up in the months ahead.
The Woodlands Coastal Promenade project, which is up for tender, will also be ready in four years. - CNA/ch
