When LA Galaxy hosts Real Salt Lake at their Los Angeles stadium on Sept 1, the club's latest multi-million-dollar signing — England international David Beckham — could well face an attacking tandem of American prodigy Freddy Adu and Singapore's own star striker, Indra Sahdan.
That's if the S.League player is successful in upcoming trials with Utah-based Real Salt Lake.
In the biggest transfer news here since Fandi Ahmad's link-up with European giants Ajax Amsterdam in 1982, Indra will know by the end of the week his trial dates with the American Major League Soccer (MLS) club.
The Home United hitman has also been offered a trial with Australian league side Melbourne Victory, which got in touch with the player after Singapore's friendly international against the Socceroos at the National Stadium on June 30.
Indra, 27, who was S-League Young Player of the Year in 2000 and 2001, told TODAY: "I have been keeping very quiet about this for some time because I wanted it to be confirmed first.
"I have had a representative assist me in contacting some clubs in the United States and in Australia, and it is good that Real Salt Lake and Victory have responded."
A police officer, Indra made his Singapore debut in 1997 and has scored 26 goals in 82 appearances for the Lions. He has informed Home United of the latest developments.
Coach Vincent Subramaniam said: "I have told Indra that this is a chance of a lifetime. If he doesn't try, he will never know how far he can go.
"I'm sure that if one of the clubs take him, he can play overseas for two years at least, and when he returns, he'll always have a club here waiting for him. If it works out, it is fantastic for him, for Home United and for Singapore football."
National coach Radojko Avramovic believes Indra is good enough to earn a contract with either side. "I think a player of his stature and ability should be spared a trial. He is a good player who will add a new dimension to any team," he said.
Real Salt Lake are currently bottom of the MLS' Western Conference, and are looking to strengthen the team when the transfer window opens in a couple of weeks.
Indra knows he is not guaranteed a contract, but said: "It doesn't matter if nothing comes out of this. I need to try. This is my chance to prove that footballers from Singapore can play in some of the world's best leagues, if we are given a chance." - TODAY/ra
