SINGAPORE: A group of Singapore students beat 3,000 others to clinch a First Class Award in China's "National IT and Creativity Competition".
Their victory also gave Singapore the rights to hold the competition in Southeast Asia next year.
It was the story on the race for the 12 Chinese zodiac signs that impressed the judges in China.
The Singapore team scored top marks for their fluent Mandarin and creative presentation.
Stessen Chia, a student at Serangoon Gardens Secondary School, said: "My Chinese grades were very low in Secondary One to Three. Most of the time, I would get C6. (Now) I'm more confident in speaking Mandarin to a big group of people."
"We've learnt to be more confident, more fluent in our reading and not to be so frightened when we go up on stage to speak," said Ynez Lim, a student at Nan Chiau Primary School.
The students also got a pat on the back from Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, who has given Nan Chiau Primary a personal souvenir to be exhibited.
The Harmony Tripod Cauldron was a gift to Mr Lee from the organisers of the competition in China.
