SINGAPORE : India has made a clean sweep at the World Billiards Championships, which were held in Singapore for the first time.
It was an all-Indian final at both the point and time format, played over 10 days at the Orchid Country Club.
In the time format finals, India's Pankaj Advani was up against his coutryman Dhruv Sitwala.
22-year-old Advani was the defending champ in the event.
And he showed his class, beating the older Sitwala over the six hours, with a score of 1946 points, against his opponent's 1488.
Advani said, "I was going through a rough phase in the game and I didn't perform well in the point format championship as well. So to come back in the time format and win the traditional format of the billiards championship is very satisfying, especially because I am defending this title, so it gives me double satisfaction."
Advani was also the defending champ for the points format, but could not repeat his performance in that category in Singapore.
Winning the point format last Saturday was another Indian, Rupesh Shah, who defeated Ashok Shandilya, also from India.
Singapore's top player and former World Champ, Peter Gilchrist, was unlucky in both forms of the competition.
However the event was still a success for host Singapore.
Subhas Anandan, President, Cuesports Singapore, said, "It has given us a lot of confidence. It is also good for the game, not only for billiards but snooker, 8 Ball, 9 Ball. Now (that) we've got the incentive, we know that we can do it, we will be trying to host more international tournaments, especially snooker and 9 Ball."
The organisers were also hoping to use the tournament to popularise the game, which is less prominent than snooker and pool. - CNA/ms
