SINGAPORE: Police have arrested five Singaporeans for trying to sell pirated goods on the Internet.
The four women and a man, aged between 24 and 34 years old, were nabbed at various locations in a 12-hour islandwide operation carried out on Monday.
Police also seized about 800 counterfeit luxury products and pirated discs, which have an estimated street value of S$24,000.
In the middle of this year, police received a tip-off that several registered online users were trying to sell suspected counterfeit luxury products and pirated discs on an Internet auction site.
The items included computer games, movies and television drama serials.
The five arrested were active online sellers with numerous past transactions.
Police tracked them down and placed them under arrest.
If convicted of Internet piracy, they face a fine of up to S$10,000 per item, up to a maximum of S$100,000, or jail of up to five years.
The arrests were the result of a joint operation between the police and the rights owners against Internet pirates.
