SINGAPORE: Going to the supermarket could soon be a brand new experience, thanks to a technology called Radio Frequency Identification.

A*STAR is working to help Singapore firms adopt this technology to enhance their business growth.

One way this technology can be applied is in supermarket shopping carts.

Shoppers pushing the cart through the aisles will get product information, including special offers, flashed onto a screen on the trolley.

The technology will even help shoppers locate items in the store and they can even scan their items for payment ahead of reaching the cashier.

These carts will enable retailers to track consumer buying behaviour.

Singapore company MediaCart Asia brought in this US innovation with support from SPRING Singapore and is currently in talks with supermarkets here for a pilot trial. -CNA/vm
