SINGAPORE: From the spicy sweet to the bitter earthy, close to 100 different herbs and spices are being housed in the 1.3-kilometre Fort Canning Spice Trail.

The trail gives visitors an enriching, educational and enjoyable experience, getting them up close with various herbs and spices.

It is a joint collaboration between the National Parks Board, Singapore Philatelic Museum, the National Museum and The National Archives of Singapore.

"We hope that through this exhibition, visitors can learn about the history of herbs and spices... in Singapore... (and) find out about the culture and heritage of Southeast Asia through the traditional use of herbs and spices," said Mishelle Lim, senior executive of Singapore Philatelic Museum.

Banners and signs detailing the culinary and cultural uses of the spices as well as other information are also placed along the trail to make sure visitors get a thorough understanding of the herbs and spices.

"If you were to come for the trail, you'll learn much more because you can see how these plants actually grow and how you can actually obtain these herbs and spices," said Surinum Sumsudin, manager of National Parks Board.

The Fort Canning Spice Trail programme will be available till October. - CNA/ac
