SINGAPORE: The case of the National Serviceman who allegedly stole an army rifle and bullets has been transferred to the High Court.
The 20-year-old, Dave Teo Ming, has been charged with unlawfully carrying a firearm, and the maximum jail term he faces is 14 years if found guilty.
It is understood that because the maximum term is more than ten years, the case cannot be heard in a district court.
For now, Teo and his accomplice Ong Boon Jun, will remain in prison.
Teo was caught after a 20-hour manhunt in early September at Orchard Road with a gun and bullets.
The full-time NSman's uncle was one of the few who visited him since he was remanded.
The other visitors included his two lawyers, one of whom has known his family for about 30 years.
"He's down... very depressed. But of course, we made him realise, and he himself realised that he has done a very stupid act and he's very contrite now, very repentant. Hopefully we can take it from there, and hopefully we can get the charge reduced," said Teo’s lawyer Abdul Aziz Yatim.
The lawyers hope that by having Teo explain why he had taken the rifle, the charge could be reduced.
His case will now be moved to the High Court.
Ong’s lawyer Amolat Singh said, "He is also concerned about his parents. That is why he did not want to impose on them financially by saying that they should try and raise (the) bail. He said he was quite prepared to ride it out in remand until the case comes up for hearing."
The case will be mentioned again on October 31. - CNA/ac
