SINGAPORE : The Foreign Affairs Ministry has marked a milestone in its Singapore Cooperation Programme.

Foreign Minister George Yeo on Friday welcomed 23-year-old Maldivian Shifana Ali as the programme's 50,000th participant.

Shifana, a civil aviation officer and an Olympic track and field athlete, is attending a course at the Singapore Aviation Academy.

The programme was established in 1992 to provide training and technical assistance programmes to less developed countries.

An average of 6,000 participants are trained annually.

The programme is now looking ahead to meet the evolving needs of its beneficiaries.

Mr Yeo said, "Apart from traditional areas like good governance, infocomm technology, civil aviation and port management, we will give greater attention to transboundary concerns like sustainable development, healthcare management, climate change and environmental management." - CNA/ms
