SINGAPORE: An aviation enthusiast has set up a website as a historical monument to mark the first commercial flight of the A380.
The A380 is the world's largest commercial aircraft.
Its first flight, from Singapore to Sydney, will take place in less than a week, on 25 October.
But for Ian Goodwin from Brisbane, the anticipation has been building up for weeks.
He bid on eBay some six weeks back and got a seat on the flight for about S$2,400.
The ardent fan then went a step further.
He set up a website dedicated to the first flight on Singapore Airlines' SQ 380.
He said: "Essentially, (this is) to preserve the flight and make it a historical resource. I am hoping to get photos and trip reports from other passengers who are on the flight."
Those photos and trip reports will be the personal insights of passengers on the inaugural commercial flight.
The website at www.sq380.net contains a list of nicknames of the passengers as well as videos and pictures of the plane.
So far, Mr Goodwin has got about 50 passengers signed up to the website.
And for those involved in making it, the flight to Sydney squares up to other engineering and aviation milestones.
Mr Goodwin said: "What it means, it is probably up there with the first commercial flight of the Boeing 747, the Concorde and perhaps even the inaugural cruise of the Queen Mary."
Mr Goodwin will be flying into Singapore three days before the flight takes off for Sydney.
And, a party has been arranged for all passengers at The Swissotel in Singapore the night before the flight and another one in Sydney.
But passengers in the first class or what is now called Suite Class will get an extra treat.
BMW will ferry them to Changi Airport, and again when they land in Sydney, to their hotels. -CNA/ir
