SINGAPORE : Foreign Minister George Yeo said the upcoming East Asia Summit which will be held in Singapore on November 21, will discuss the Myanmar situation.

Speaking at a conference organised by the Lee Kuan Yew School for Public Policy, Minister Yeo said the leaders will discuss how the summit can support UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari's mission in Myanmar.

Both China and India are also members of the East Asia Summit.

Mr Yeo told the conference that for Southeast Asia, ASEAN was the best hope for the future. If ASEAN is divided then there is the danger that the region would be balkanised.

Mr Yeo also described the forthcoming signing of the ASEAN Charter as a major milestone for the grouping.

He added that the problems in Myanmar would not stop ASEAN from crossing the milestone. - CNA/ch
