SINGAPORE: The list of nine cities bidding to stage the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010 has been finalised.

The nine cities are Athens, Bangkok, Debrecen, Guatemala City, Kuala Lumpur, Moscow, Poznan, Singapore and Turin.

Singapore is confident of its comprehensive plans but acknowledges that the competition is tough, especially with neighbours Malaysia and Thailand also in the running.

Singapore National Olympic Council Vice-President Low Teo Ping said: "There could be a certain support that you may lose in Asia because of the split votes... because two Asian countries or three Asian countries are involved.

"But hopefully, the short-listing will tell us where we eventually stand with regards to the kind of regional support that we hope to get."

Both Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok have staged big multi-sports events before, but Singapore is hoping to turn its lack of experience of hosting major games into an advantage.

"I hope common sense prevails and encourages all those countries that have previously not been involved with the Summer or Winter Olympics," said Mr Low.

The International Olympic Committee will announce the shortlisted cities on November 19, and the winner will be known in February 2008. - CNA/ac
