SINGAPORE : Employers are now more willing to employ Persons With Disabilities (PWD).
According to the Enabling Employers Network, there are now 192 job vacancies in 37 companies which are suitable for PWDs.
And there will be more jobs available soon, including white-collar positions, with the launch of an online portal.
Jean Lee has run her food & beverage business with the help of PWDs for 13 years.
Lee's company is one of the eight pioneers under the Enabling Employers Network, which is an alliance of employers who hire PWDs.
Currently, Lee's company has six PWDs working in four of her outlets.
Although they can work like other employees, Lee said, the challenge is in the training.
"When working with disabled people, we need to demonstrate more care... The colleagues must look after them, explain why they must do one thing first and then to another. They have to see how they can perform as well. Then you have to motivate them, make sure they are very familiar before they can go on to another area," said Lee, MD of Carona Holdings Pte Ltd.
But PWDs are also very loyal.
Lim Teck Meng, who was the first PWD hired by Lee, has worked at her company for 13 years.
"If there is one message that I want to go out to employers, that is the disabled workers work harder because they want to prove that they are part of society. They want the pride and recognition from their employers, and they are more loyal," said David Wong, Chairman of Enabling Employers Network.
The Enabling Employers Network is now promoting white-collar jobs for some qualified PWDs, with the help of a new online portal which will be launched soon.
PWDs can submit their resumes online and expect jobs in middle management in various industries, including the banking and insurance sectors, tourism as well as healthcare.
Applicants can start sending their CVs from November 3 to www.jobs-odf.com.
