SINGAPORE: The subject of re-employment of older workers is a national priority, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Lim Boon Heng.

It is the most important piece in the policy changes that the government has made so that Singaporeans can enjoy a happy and fulfilling life in their senior years, the minister said, speaking at the Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) Employees Union 60th anniversary dinner on Friday.

Mr Lim, who oversees the government's efforts in tackling ageing issues, said he hopes that both the Singapore National Employers' Federation (SNEF) and the Manpower Ministry (MOM) will follow what the NTUC has done recently - set up expert groups to study the issues.

In particular, Mr Lim said he believes the SNEF can help bring about a mindset change among employers and help Human Resource managers clarify the criteria for re-employment.

Mr Lim also said that the tripartite experts' groups should meet regularly to review experiences, identify road blocks, and help find solutions. The groups can provide the real-life experiences on the proposed legislation on re-employment.

Since the NTUC started pushing for re-employment in companies, 345 firms have signed on to pursue the cause. As a result, some 3313 workers have been re-employed, according to the minister, who also said the move has been "credible progress".
