SINGAPORE: More Singaporeans are aware of the signs of gambling addiction and where they can seek help, according to the latest survey conducted by the National Council on Problem Gambling.
The council said public awareness of the signs of problem gambling rose by 29 percentage point, compared to 2006.
Of the 2,013 respondents, at least one in five knew of the helpline numbers that provide support for gambling addicts and their families.
And those who said they will seek professional help if their family members have gambling-related problems also increased by 19 per cent.
Over 70 per cent of the respondents said they will continue to approach family for first help if they have problems with excessive gambling.
The study, conducted between April and May, also showed a shift in perceptions towards gambling.
About 60 per cent, up ten per cent from previous year, considered 4D, Toto and Singapore Sweep as leisure activities rather than gambling activities.
This year's survey included a new question on family exclusion orders, and 47 per cent of the respondents indicated they would apply for it to ban family members with gambling problems from the casinos. - CNA/ac
