ASEAN Secretary-General Ong Keng Yong says it is not realistic to expect dramatic changes in Myanmar from two or three shuttle diplomatic trips by the Special UN Envoy Ibrahim Gambari.
Speaking to Channel NewsAsia on the sidelines of an East Asia conference on regional integration, Mr Ong adds that Mr Gambari's trips would also establish that a regime change in Myanmar country is impossible.
Mr Ong says: "All of us outside of Myanmar cannot impose our will on what happens in the country. All that we can do is to bring the two sides together. Because if we try to do more than that you have many recent examples elsewhere in the world to show that this kind of involvement will be very demanding.
"We hope that we will work with the UN Secretary-General to bring across a kind of orderliness. It may not be enough to satisfy everybody. But our priority today is we must stop the killing, we must stop political imprisonment and we must strengthen this dialogue which seems to be opening." - CNA/ch
