Yachting: Singapore included on Volvo round-the-world race

SINGAPORE: The Volvo Ocean Race comes to Singapore shores in 2009, and when it arrives, it looks set to make a big splash.

The event is expected to pull in over a billion television viewers, raising Singapore's profile in the world of sports once again.

There will also be tangible spin-offs from the world's premier offshore yachting event.

The Volvo Ocean Race tests the endurance of teams over 10 long months.

That is why it is the most prestigious race on water and many consider it the Formula One of sailing.

One Degree 15 marina on Sentosa will be one of the stops for the 2008/2009 season.

While the main action will take place in the open seas, there are in-port races that Singaporeans will be able to enjoy.

Low Teo Ping, vice-president of International Sailing Federation, said: "... it also creates an opportunity for a festival to take place... also provides for a lot of economic benefits."

Mr Low was instrumental in bringing the race to Singapore, after seeing through negotiations which took more than a year to complete.

His efforts even saw Volvo Ocean Race CEO, Glen Bourke, coming to Singapore for a visit to check if the local infrastructure is adequate.

More details of the premier event at One Degree 15 will be revealed on 19 November.

But what is confirmed for now is that the race will start in October 2008 in Spain and after 11 legs, competitors will end in Russia's St Petersburg in July 2009. - CNA/ir
