SINGAPORE : Hundreds of thousands of Singaporeans were out on New Year's Eve to usher in 2008.
But the best parties were not just happening downtown.
There were many large-scale countdown parties at Housing and Development Board (HDB) estates.
From Singapore's new downtown at Marina Bay to cable cars at Mount Faber and the beach at Sentosa, there was no shortage of fireworks.
There were plenty of action on the ground as well with foam parties and concerts.
Housing estates were also not left out of the celebrations.
Over 10,000 residents at Woodlands were treated to 5 minutes of fireworks, concerts and carnival games.
Organised by NorthWest Community Development Council, it was the first time the residential district held such a large-scale countdown party.
Members of parliament (MPs) for the constituency also joined in the fun.
"(I) wish everyone good health, more wages, more bonus and lower costs of living," cheered Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan. He is also MP for Sembawang GRC.
Many Singaporeans also looked forward to better things in 2008.
"I hope fuel prices go down. It's really expensive now and I have to go to JB (Johor Bahru) to top up. I just want to stay in Singapore," said one Singaporean.
Another said: "I wish good health for my parents and myself."
"I hope for things to be better next year and that I can live a few more years," said an elderly Singaporean.
Grassroots organisations said they have put together more heartland parties this year because of the good turnouts in previous years.
And judging by the numbers who turned up this time, such parties are likely to increase in numbers and scale in the future. - CNA /ls
