SINGAPORE: Over 500 people are taking part in an annual event that challenges them to stop smoking.

It is part of a series of activities held to mark the new year on the Muslim calendar, known as Muharram.

This year's Muharram Challenge has attracted previous participants as well as a record number of 30 women.

The challenge runs from 13 January to 17 February. Within this period of time, participants will face mini-challenges to test their resolve to quit smoking.

They will get surprise visits from organisers who will check on their smoke-free status. Those who fail, will be dropped from the competition.

The ultimate winner will receive a holiday package or electrical goods worth S$2,500. Results will be announced on 17 February.

Organised by Clubilya – a non-profit organisation set up to help youths – and the Health Promotion Board, this is the third year the challenge is being held.
