SINGAPORE: Some 57,000 MRT passengers in the eastern part of Singapore were affected on Monday morning.

Train services between Pasir Ris and Tanah Merah stations were disrupted for more than seven hours from 5.28am to 12.45pm.

SMRT said this was due to a breakdown of maintenance works between Tampines and Simei stations.

Unlike normal days, passengers were told that they needed to change to another train at Tanah Merah station in order to head to the city.

Besides apologizing for the inconvenience, there was no other explanation for the delay, leaving many commuters unhappy.

One passenger said: “Very disappointed. What has happened? Should have explained right?”

But SMRT said the first shuttle service began just 10 minutes after the disruption at Pasir Ris station, which was about 5.30am.

The disruption began at 5.28am and shuttle services began at 5.38am at Pasir Ris and at 5.48am at Tanah Merah.

A total of 70 buses from SMRT and SBS Transit were deployed to ferry passengers from Pasir Ris, Tampines and Simei stations, to Tanah Merah station.

Normal services resumed at about 12.45pm.

Residents living next to the MRT tracks where the disruption occurred, told Channel NewsAsia that they heard a loud sound on the tracks before dawn. SMRT said there were some damages to the maintenance works train.

The cause is still being investigated.

Also probing Monday's disrupted services is the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

And any penalty to be imposed on SMRT will depend on what LTA finds in its investigations. -CNA/vm
