Singapore continues to be a favourite destination for travellers, generating a new record of some $13.8 billion in tourism receipts (TR) in 2007.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in announcing the record performance at the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) held in Bangkok, also revealed that Singapore also set a new high of 10.3 million visitor arrivals in 2007.
More than half of the visitors were from the region, with Indonesians topping the list of Singapore’s top five visitor-generating markets in 2007.
Also significant was the rise in vistor numbers from Australia, which hit an all-time high of 79,000 in December 2007 and the strong growth and record arrivals from India.
Singapore welcomed 749,000 travellers from India this year, and part of the reason says the STB is the country's positive economic growth and rising disposable incomes which dovetailed well with strategic advertising and tactical promotions.
The Christmas in the Tropics promotions during the festive year-end season also seemed to pay off, with December emerging as the most popular month for travelling to Singapore.
During that period hotels reaped some $153 million in room revenue, which was a 20 percent increase over December 2006. This bolstered total room revenue to an all-time high of S$1.8 billion.
The STB said expansion of low cost carriers, attractive air and travel promotions and in the case of Australia, strong currency appreciation are some of the reasons for the strong tourism numbers. - CNA/sf
