SINGAPORE: Two more men have been detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA).

One was spreading radical ideas and the other had tried to make bombs.

Five others who were detained since January 2002 and December 2003, have been released when their Orders of Detention expired.

Muhammad Zamri Abdullah and Maksham Mohd Shah, both 26, have been detained since last 5 December 2007.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said Zamri was self-radicalised through radical propaganda in publications, videos and the internet.

He even went overseas to join a 'mujahidin network' to wage armed missions overseas and he wanted to 'die a martyr'.

MHA added that since 2003, Zamri had spread his radical ideas to his associates.

They include Maksham and Mohammad Taufik Andjah Asmara, both 26.

Maksham subsequently developed radical ideas and constructed improvised explosive devices for use in armed jihad. He also tried making bombs with sparklers.

After watching videos of terrorist training, Zamri and Maksham also went on overseas camping trips to prepare themselves to wage armed jihad and die as martyrs.

As for Taufik, investigations showed that he eventually started to distance himself from the two.

So Taufik has not been detained but was issued with a Restriction Order in December 2007.

In a statement, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, or MUIS said, it supports the firm action taken against these three self-radicalised young men, who were 'clearly misguided'.

MUIS said the activities they were involved with could cause innocent lives and destabilise Singapore's society. MUIS stressed that this is not the true teaching of Islam or any civilisation.

Meanwhile, five Jemaah Islamiyah detainees have been released as their Orders of Detention have expired.

The five are Hosnay Awi, Adnan Musa, Fathi Abu Bakar Bafana, Halim Hussain and Mohamad Anuar Margono.

They were detained between 2002 and 2003.

MHA said they had co-operated in investigations and responded positively to rehabilitation, including religious counselling.

All five have been issued with a Restriction Order (RO) upon their release from detention.

Also released is Mohd Agus Ahmad Selani, a Singaporean detained for his involvement with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, or MILF.

He was released with a Suspension Direction - which means that he must abide by certain conditions and restrictions after release. Otherwise, he could be re-detained.

Five other JI and MILF members' Restriction Orders expired on 9 January but were not renewed.

They are Abu Bakar Sedek Hashim, Mohamed Yusuf Mohamad Noor, Mohammad Hashim, Mohd Abdul Rahim Baharom and Mohd Shafiee Osman.

They were first issued with ROs on 10 Jan 2004. But as they've also been co-operative in investigations and rehabilitation, the Ministry said they were assessed to no longer be in need of supervision under an RO.

In response to the new arrests and the latest release, MUIS urged Muslims to pay attention to how young people are learning about Islam by checking the source of the teachings and the websites they frequent. -CNA/vm
