SINGAPORE: If you visit the Singapore Airshow in March, expect to carry a very special tag.
Organisers are using Radio Frequency Identification or RFID tags, on its visitor passes.
The tags are read by an antenna and the information is sent through a reader, to a computer.
The company behind this is known as the 'Singapore Airshow and Events'.
It said it's collecting the data to help organise future events.
Danny Soong, Sales Manager of Singapore Airshow and Events, said: "The purpose of the usage of this in this particular show and this particular industry is not about going into that level of personal data. It's really more for marketing intelligence to allow us to better plan future events in terms of visitor flow, visitorship from different countries."
To prepare the passes with RFID tags, the company received S$150,000 by A*STAR.
That's half the total cost of about S$300,000.
A*STAR's marketing and commercialisation arm, 'Exploit Techologies', is also providing 75 RFID readers.
The Airshow received funding from the 'National Radio Frequency Identification Innovation Platform'.
This was announced by Minister of State for Trade and Industry, S Iswaran on Friday at the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology.
He added that S$4.5 million is available to a total of 30 public or private organisations, to fund pilot projects, over the next four years. -CNA/vm
