SINGAPORE : In a small country like Singapore, walking tours may just be the best way to discover the island.
Now, there's a new trail that promises to be a lot of fun - the Historical Pub Walk.
Launched on Tuesday, the trail is organised by a company called "Journeys", which started the Original Singapore Walks about five years ago.
The trail brings guests through three historical pubs in the Boat Quay area - the natural stage for looking back at the history of early Singapore.
Guests get to hear numerous stories during the tour. For example, Nick Leeson, the infamous trader who brought down Barings Bank, used to frequent Harry's Bar. The bar now even has a drink named after Leeson - aptly called Bank Breaker.
"I'm pleasantly surprised. No pub walk has been able to incorporate our Singapore culture and history into the itinerary so I think this is a very refreshing experience for me," said one guest who joined in the walk.
"From the point of view of expatriates, we often have visitors in town and you can't be with them or take them around all the time, so I will just put them in the direction of these walks, especially the pub walks. They'll be really happy," said another.
The walk is called "Triple Exchange" and will run every Saturday evening. It was officially launched on February 12 by the Second Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.
Organisers said a similar walk along Clarke Quay will be coming up in April or May. - CNA /ls
