SINGAPORE: Members from the London Olympics team are expected to make their way to Singapore for the Youth Olympic Games in 2010.

Chairman of the London Olympics 2012, Lord Sebastian Coe told Channel NewsAsia that coaches and administrators from the UK will be making the trip.

Coe, a two-time Olympic gold medallist is in Singapore, for the inaugural World Effie Festival.

He gave a speech on his experience in bidding for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The festival is an international conference for professionals in the creative and marketing industries.

The two-day event will be attended by some 2,000 people from round the world.

He said the challenge for Singapore in organising the Youth Olympic Games is to make sure that it will not just create the next generation of top athletes but also sports-related professionals like sports writers and physical education teachers.

And new digital media must be used to get the young totally involved in the Games.

Lord Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the London 2012 Olympics, said: “If traditional media was the way and still is the way our heroes and role models are created, then new digital media gives life to the role models.

“It allows young people to access their lifestyles, their training programs and it allows them to compete in a virtual world against each other and sometimes accept and take reward in the real world."

Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo revealed in Parliament on Thursday that China has also offered to support Singapore in organising the Games in 2010.

He said that the Chinese Ambassador to Singapore, Zhang Xiaokang wrote to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong after hearing news that Singapore won the bid to host the inaugural games.

Mr Yeo said Singapore will take up the offer as part of many bilateral collaborations between the two countries. -CNA/vm
