SINGAPORE: Taxi commuters have welcomed the move to take cabs only from taxi stands in the Central Business District (CBD).
This measure was announced by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in November 2007, and kicked in last Saturday.
This applies even if the passenger makes a taxi booking via phone.
To facilitate the change, the LTA installed 15 more taxi stands in 2007, bringing the total number to 95 in the CBD area.
The LTA said the move is to enhance road safety and it is working with taxi companies to identify more locations for taxi stands.
While there were some commuters who were not too happy with the new measures, most of them lauded the move as it would be easier to get taxis and there would also be less confusion when calling for a cab.
LTA said there will be a taxi stand within 300 metres from buildings in the CBD, which translates to a five-minute walk.
Most taxi drivers said the new ruling is unlikely to affect their income although some expect confusion on the part of passengers during the initial weeks.
Despite the new rule, some taxis were still picking up passengers from non-designated areas. Taxi operators said they will send out reminders on the new ruling to their cab drivers over the next few days. - CNA/vm
