SINGAPORE: The 2008 Formula One season has begun in Australia and the F1 fever has caught on in a big way here in Singapore.

With the Grand Prix making its debut here in September, more Singaporeans are following the action this year, which is why more viewing parties are being planned.

The viewing party at The Pines is just one of several events that will be held this weekend for the Australian Grand Prix.

To help F1 enthusiasts get more information on the races, organisers of viewing parties are already lining up a slew of activities for this year.

Jeffrey Leong, General Manager, The Pines, said: "We have even thought of forming a club for members to sign up... and we will hold races amongst them on race days."

The Pines will be holding viewing parties for all the F1 races this season, but the big one will be the Singapore Grand Prix in September.

While viewing parties and simulators are the 'in' thing this season, some Singaporeans still prefer the real deal and quite a few of them are in Melbourne right now, acting as marshals for the Australian GP.

Twenty-two of them have been in Melbourne since Thursday to get a better understanding of their roles as marshals.

They will be among 900 marshals who have been selected by Singapore Grand Prix to help run the Singapore F1 race.

John Lyn, F1 Marshal, Melbourne (Australia), said: "We are very much hands on – all of us are doing exactly what most of the other volunteers are doing in Australia, running the F1.

"Some of us are in pit lane, some of us in race control, some of us are in sector marshalling, and some of us are in administration. We are all sitting and scheduling next to the senior marshals out in Australia."

Mr Lyn added that even though marshals are close to the race action, they hardly get to watch the race or meet the drivers.

Nonetheless, the experience they gain will be crucial for the Singapore event.
