SINGAPORE: Members of the organising committee for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) will head to the Swiss city of Lausanne on Sunday, said Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Mr Teo Ser Luck.

They will be there for a week to meet the International Olympic Committee (IOC) members.

Speaking to reporters at a rock-climbing event on Saturday, Mr Teo said the Singapore team will be discussing operational issues and business platforms.

He said: "The logistics, operational and organisational aspects will be key to our team. Secondly, the business aspect in terms of sponsorship and how we can use the YOG platform to help our companies locally.

"Thirdly, the international relations between the different countries – their national Olympic committees and the International Olympic Committee."

Mr Teo also gave an update on the progress of the inquiry committee for last year's Dragon Boat tragedy.

Five athletes from Singapore died when their boat capsized after a Dragon Boat race in Cambodia last November.

The parliamentary secretary said the inquiry committee has completed its report on safety recommendations and this report will be made public after the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports has completed its review.

On a separate note, Mr Teo commented on recent media reports which highlighted the plight of foreign athletes who had come to Singapore, hoping to become professional sportsmen.

He commended their faith and confidence in Singapore's sports sector, but he said: "If they want to carve out a career in sports, I believe it is necessary for them to be at the level where they could comfortably make a living out of sports."

Mr Teo also advised these athletes to find out if "they are suitable to compete well in this sports environment in Singapore". If they are not, he urged these athletes to "acquire certain life skills to integrate themselves into the community".
