SINGAPORE : Bringing people together through community sports - that is the theme for the inaugural Community Sports Festival.

This will be an annual series of sports activities held in the five districts - from now till July 27.

The Community Sports Festival was launched at Tampines Central Park to much fanfare on Friday.

The event featured unusual games, such as bossaball, life-size foosball, and inflatable jousting - all to engage a crowd of nearly 2,000.

Defence Minister and MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, Teo Chee Hean, said, "This Community Sports Festivals will provide a focus to draw community sports clubs into a more active mode, and also to draw more people in to join. I think such a festival is an attraction for people; the sports interest groups can use them to encourage more people to join them."

Mr Teo also launched the 56-hour futsal competition, which organisers hope will set a record for the longest 5-A-Side match with the most participants.

It features over 700 male and female participants, from 7 to 45 years old.

Futsal player Tan Yen Zi said, "It's actually one form of sports that girls and boys can excel in, as long as we learn the same values, like teamwork, and also commitment, and the desire to excel."

Those who are interested to find out when these festivities will come to their district can check the People's Association
website, or make queries at their community centre. - CNA/ms
