SINGAPORE: Nanyang Technological University may be scrapping its proposal to house three students in double rooms on campus accommodation.
The university had earlier proposed the triple-share scheme in a bid to ease hostel room shortage.
NTU said the scheme is still in the proposal stage and nothing has been confirmed.
But the plan had drawn criticism from many students.
Channel NewsAsia understands that during a meeting with student representatives on 23 March, NTU's Dean of Students, Associate Professor Lok Tat Seng, had assured them that the plan will not go ahead.
Professor Lok is expected to make an announcement in the student paper, the Nanyang Chronicle next week.
NTU's reversal is likely due to widespread student unhappiness.
Many had gone online to express their views.
Some students had also planned to be clad in black clothes on 25 March as a sign of protest, but this is not likely to go ahead now.
The triple-share proposal, while highly unpopular, is seen as a way for NTU to meet the expected increase in demand for on-campus accommodation in the coming academic year.
The 16 Halls of Residence can currently hold over 9,000 students, but with the freshmen intake expected to go up this year, that means competition for hostel room will be even tighter, if the plan is dropped. - CNA/vm
