SINGAPORE : Following in the foot-steps of their able-bodied athletes, disabled athletes too are now rewarded cash for their golden exploits.

The first to get the money are swimmers Theresa Goh and Ng Xiu Zhen for their gold medal performances at the recent 4th ASEAN Para Games.

A ceremony was held on Wednesday evening to honour the two athletes, who each received $1,000 under the Athletes Achievement Awards Scheme.

It is modelled after the Multi-million Dollar Award Programme but the quantum is tagged at 10 percent of what the able-bodied athletes get.

Attending the ceremony were the rest of the Singapore contingent which competed in the Games, as well as and family and friends of the athletes. - CNA/de
