SINGAPORE: The release of a Dutch film on Islam is regrettable and offensive to Muslims, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng said in a written reply to media queries on the film.
The film "Fitna" has been described as having taken verses from the Koran, Islam's holy book, out of context.
Produced by Dutch MP Geert Wilders, the 17-minute film was posted on the video-sharing website LiveLeak.com.
Mr Wong said "freedom of expression does not give anyone the licence to insult another's religion or race."
He added that he is confident Singaporeans will react to this film in the same rational and calm manner as they did in similar previous incidents.
A Danish newspaper had published cartoons of the Prophet Mohamed in September 2005, which caused outrage among Muslims, who consider any images of the prophet offensive.
Mr Wong said Singaporeans value the racial and religious harmony they enjoy here.
In a separate statement, the National Council of Churches of Singapore said it deplores the release of the film and considers it irresponsible.
The council said the film denigrates Islam by portraying it as a religion of violence and aggression, and totally distorts the fact that there are millions of peace-loving and tolerant Muslims.
The council said in Singapore, members of the Muslim community live and work in peace while relating to their neighbours with respect and tolerance.
It added that it is "not right, under any circumstances, to offend the sensitivities of any religious group, and our society must guard against any attempt to do so." - CNA/ac
