SINGAPORE : The Ministry of Education has said there are only seven foreign universities established in Singapore as part of the Economic Development Board's Global Schoolhouse programme.

It said there are many foreign universities offering degree programmes through local agents. But they are considered to be private education organisations (PEOs) and they do not have university status in Singapore.

The MOE said this in response to reports about the establishment of Singapore campuses by foreign universities.

The seven foreign universities are Chicago Graduate School of Business, DigiPen Institute of Technology, ESSEC Business School, INSEAD, New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, S P Jain Center of Management and University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The MOE said "these institutions provide a wide range of high quality programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels".

To check the type of establishment regime of educational institutions, you are advised to log on to http://www.moe.gov.sg under the heading "Education System".

Local universities, as well as those foreign universities established as part of EDB's Global Schoolhouse programme, are listed under the "Post-Secondary" sub-heading.

External degree programmes are listed under the "Private Schools" sub-heading.

The MOE said there are four local universities and these are Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University and UniSIM. - CNA/de
