SINGAPORE : A new statutory board has been set up to ensure that the operation of a casino remains free from criminal influence.

The Casino Regulatory Authority of Singapore (CRA) is operational from Wednesday, and comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

In a statement, the MHA said other functions of the CRA include making sure that gaming in a casino is conducted honestly.

The CRA is also tasked to regulate the operators to contain and control the "potential of a casino to cause harm to minors, vulnerable persons and society at large." All these come under the Casino Control Act.

The MHA has appointed 13 people from various sectors to be the CRA Board Members. Heading the team is Richard Magnus, Senior District Judge of the Subordinate Courts.

The CRA's immediate focus will be capacity-building and finalising the legal groundwork to regulate various aspects of the casinos. This will be completed well before the casinos at the Integrated Resorts start their operations.

Casino operators and other persons regulated under the Casino Control Act will have to apply to the CRA for regulatory approval.

The CRA's corporate headquarters will be located at PSA Building, #01-01, 460 Alexandra Road, Singapore 119963. Public services, including issuing licences to special employees and junket operators, will be provided from this office.
