WASHINGTON : US President George Bush has said he is disappointed with the progress in Myanmar to date, and urged the military leadership to open up and respond to the will of the people.

He made this point during talks with Singapore's Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong when they met at the Oval Office in Washington.

Mr Goh told President Bush that while the army is the problem in Myanmar, it has to be part of the solution; and that without the army playing a part in solving problems, there will be no solution.

The leaders also discussed developments in Tibet, and agreed it would be good for China to start a dialogue with representatives of the Dalai Lama. Mr Bush also briefed Mr Goh on developments in Iraq and the US' concerns over Iran.

The president also expressed his appreciation of Singapore's firm stance against extremists and radicals. He said Singapore is a very strong ally in the war against the extremists.

Mr Goh is in Washington to attend the 5th meeting of the Commission on Growth and Development. He also called on US Vice President Richard Cheney at the White House.

Mr Goh's meeting with former US President Bill Clinton in New York could not be arranged due to scheduling difficulties. However, Mr Clinton made a telephone call to Mr Goh on Wednesday, during which they talked about the elections in the US. - CNA/ms
