SINGAPORE: The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has issued a fresh alert on two illegal health products – "Zhong Hua Niu Bian" and "Santi Niu Bian", which is also known as "Santi Bovine Penis Erecting Capsule".
This is in addition to earlier alerts on Power 1 Walnut and fake Cialis.
So far, almost 90 people have been hospitalised from taking such products and the authorities fear the number will rise further.
The latest two illegal sexual enhancement products contain unhealthy levels of medicine used to treat patients with diabetes and erectile dysfunction.
These illegal products have killed one person and caused two others to slip into a coma.
Chan Cheng Leng, Assistant Director, Centre for Drug Administration, HSA, said: "For the "Santi Niu Bian", we have a patient who developed serious symptoms like low blood sugar, confusion. Fortunately, he has recovered."
Dr John Lim, CEO of HSA, said: "Any product from a dubious source cannot be trusted no matter how good the packaging looks, and no matter how authentic the product looks.
"What is ironic is that herbal products have leaflets that warn people not to take products of low quality when these same products contain dangerous substances that can kill."
Authorities said these illegal products are being peddled in places like hawker centres and the public is advised to call the HSA if they come across or suspect any illegal sale of such items.
