Three critical factors led to Mas Selamat's escape

SINGAPORE : Details of Mas Selamat Kastari's escape, released in Parliament earlier this week, became a hot topic among netizens. Many said they were surprised at the mistakes that occurred.

While most Singaporeans had been eagerly waiting for the news of how the incident could have happened, some felt that the eventual report left a number of unanswered questions, such as how Mas Selamat could have disappeared so quickly.

In true blogger form, there were numerous tongue-in-cheek digs, such as the non-operational CCTVs, on popular sites like www.TalkingCock.com and www.mrbrown.com. But there was no mistaking the overall undertone of incredulity.

On popular blog www.yawningbread.org, it was felt that Mas Selamat's escape was more a case of management failures rather than merely a mistake by the guards.

Another issue raised by bloggers was the seemingly flawed response in the immediate aftermath of the escape. Many felt that there were conflicting information released by authorities, such as Mas Selamat's limp, even after top officials had already taken over.

But the strongest comments were reserved for the issue of accountability. Despite Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's detailed explanation of his position and the need to draw lines, the comments went beyond the issue of resignation.

Many saw the need for some sort of penalty for the senior officials who had oversight responsibilities, over and above the officers who were directly responsible.

With Mas Selamat still on the loose, the chapter in this issue is far from closed. - CNA /ls
