SINGAPORE: MediShield premiums will go up between a few dollars and S$40 a month from December 1, depending on age.
The Health Ministry (MOH) is raising the premiums so that it can increase the MediShield payouts to reduce the financial burden on Singaporeans with large Class B2 and Class C hospital bills.
This will be achieved through raising the MediShield claim limits substantially.
For example, the claim limits for ward and treatment charges will go up from S$250 to S$450 a day, and for an intensive care unit ward, the claim limit will be increased from S$500 to S$900 a day.
MOH said the changes will improve the insurance coverage of large Class B2 and Class C bills from the current 60 percent to 80 percent.
The deductible stays the same for those under 80 – S$1,500 for Class B2 and S$1,000 for Class C. But it will be raised to S$3,000 for Class B2 and S$2,000 for Class C for those aged 81 to 85.
To help elderly Singaporeans pay for the premiums, the government will top up their Medisave accounts in September.
This will range from S$150 for those aged 51 to 60, to S$550 for those aged 81 and above.
MOH will also raise the annual Medisave withdrawal limit to S$1,150 for policyholders aged above 80. For the rest, it stays at S$800.
Singaporeans can use their Medisave to pay for MediShield premiums for themselves and their dependants.
