WELLINGTON: President S R Nathan kicked off his first state visit to New Zealand on Sunday, to further strengthen ties between Singapore and New Zealand.
His delegation includes National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan and Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Balaji Sadasivan.
One of the highlights of the trip on Sunday was to meet Singaporean students – many of whom are studying landscape architecture at the Lincoln University in Christchurch.
The students discussed various topics with the president and his delegation, from the upcoming Youth Olympic Games to their cultural experiences in New Zealand.
Mr Nathan was also briefed on some of the research carried out at the university such as the impact of tourism on the environment as well as measures to improve agricultural output.
The president also made a stop at the International Antarctic Centre that is home to the New Zealand, US and Italian Antarctic programmes which support scientific work in the Antarctica.
Mr Nathan met various ASEAN Heads of Missions in the afternoon as well.
Over the next few days, he will be meeting New Zealand leaders such as Prime Minister Helen Clarke and deputy opposition leader, Bill English.
