SINGAPORE: In an act of selflessness, a 16-year-old girl has given away her bursary award of more than S$600 to her best friend whom she feels needs the money more.

Tan Chin Won and Abdul Hafiiz have been the best of friends for the past four years. They had clicked immediately when they started attending Yishun Secondary School.

Hafiiz said: "I knew Chin Won since Secondary One. I was all alone and she came up to me, so that's when I got to know her. Our friendship is really close, but not like 'boy and girl friend'..."

"He is a very cute and funny guy. We have been in the same class for four years," said Chin Won.

After the December holidays last year, Hafiiz had shared his family's problems with Chin Won.

"He told us that his dad had leukaemia and he had to go to the hospital every day during his school holidays to visit his father," said Chin Won.

Hafiiz's father has since stopped working as a technical assistant at Ngee Ann Secondary School. His mother is presently working as a part-time librarian.

Hafiiz and his family are now being helped by their extended family and friends.

So when Chin Won received an award of S$650 from the Singapore Buddhist Lodge on Saturday, she gave it all to Hafiiz.

And as Hafiiz has also achieved excellent academic results, he garnered the Endeavour Award which comes with twice as much money as the Bursary Award.

Coupled with his best friend's gift, Hafiiz now has close to S$2,000 to help meet his family's needs.
