SINGAPORE: A Singapore Airlines (SIA) plane flying from Singapore to Paris on 25 April had to be diverted to Delhi following an engine failure warning.

SIA said pilots of SQ332, a Boeing 777-300ER diverted the plane when the warning about the left engine was displayed.

In accordance with procedures, the pilot shut down the engine and diverted the plane to the nearest suitable airport, which was Delhi.

The aircraft was carrying 235 passengers and 17 crew members. It landed at Delhi at 1713 hours local time (1943 hours Singapore time) on 25 April.

SIA made arrangements for customers to continue their journey to Paris using a relief aircraft which was despatched to Delhi shortly after.

The airline said it regrets the inconvenience caused to customers but stressed that the diversion was necessary in the interests of safety.

A detailed investigation of the engine was conducted by engineers and the fault was found to be in the gearbox. SIA said the engine has been replaced and the aircraft is expected to return to service in due course.

Engineers from the airline and engine manufacturer GE will conduct further assessment on the engine after it is removed from the aircraft. - CNA/vm
